A Whiter Shade Of Pale(창백한 그림자)

 

We skipped the light fandango
And turned cartwheels cross the floor.
우리는 판당고 춤을 추고
마루바닥을 뒹구는 재주 넘기를 했죠

I was feeling kind of seasick
But the crowd called out for more.
나는 현기증이 났어요
그치만 군중들은 환호성을 더욱쳤고

The room was humming harder
And the ceiling flew away
방이 점점 더 시끄러워지고
천장이 날아가 버렸습니다

When we called out for another drink
The waiter brought a tray
우리가 또 술을 시켰을땐
웨이터는 쟁반만 가져왔죠

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
그리고 잠시후 그가 얘기를 하던중
그녀의 얼굴은 처음에는

That her face at first just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale.
귀신처럼 질리더니
창백하게 변했어요

She said 'There is no reason,
And the truth is plain to see,'
그녀는 말했죠 아무 이유가 없어요,
그리고 진실은 명백합니다"

But I wandered through my playing cards
And would not let her be
그러나 나는 놀고있던 카드를
가지고 그냥 장난쳤죠

One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
그녀를 내버려 두고 싶지 않았죠
16명의 처녀 총각 중 한 명이

And although my eyes were open
They might just just have well been closed.
바닷가로 떠나고 있었죠
비록 내 눈은 떠 있었지만

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
그것들은 감은거나 마찬가지였죠
그리고 잠시 후

프로콜 해이럼(Procol Harum) - A Whiter Shade of Pale (1967)
1966년 영국의 어느 시골에서 

음악은 모르는 한 시인과 시는 모르는 음악가들이 결성한 밴드로,
이듬해인 67년에 추가 가입한 오르가니스트 Matthew Fisher의 아이디어로 
바흐의 관현악 모음곡 3번에서 제2악장을 부분적으로 차용해 작곡하고,
난해하면서도 철학적인 가사를 선호했던 당시의 분위기를 반영하듯, 
멤버 중 시인이었던 Keith Reid가 영국의 고전 시인 Geoffrey Chaucer의 
켄터베리 이야기(The Canterbury Tales)〉 중 
제2화 [방앗간주인의 이야기]에서 부분 발췌하여 
써 내려간 가사를 덧붙여 완성되었다.
