찰리채플린의 '위대한독재자'중, 이 연설 장면은 정말 우수운 장면이다. 그는 만민의 평등과 평화와 사랑을 얘기하지만 후반부로 갈수록 감정적이며 빠르고 흥분에 가득찬 얼굴로 히틀러와 유사한 모습의 파시즘 역활을 수행한다. 그러나 오늘날의 정치나 사회 문제를 꿰뚤른듯한 내용들은 매우 놀랍고 진지하게 받아들여져야 한다.

"I'm sorry but I don't want to be an Emperor.

미안합니다만, 저는 황제가 되고 싶지 않습니다.
''That's not my business. I don't want to rule or conquer anyone.
그건 제가 할 일이 아닙니다. 저는 또한 누군가를 다스리거나 정복하고 싶지도 않습니다.

I should like to help everyone if possible, Jew, gentile, black man, white.
유태인이건 기독교인이건 흑인이건 백인이건, 나는 가능한 모든 이를 돕기를 원합니다.
We all want to help on-e another, human beings are like that.
모든 인류가 그렇듯, 우리 모두 서로 돕기를 원합니다.
''We all want to live by each other's happiness, not by each other's misery.
남의 불행을 딛고 사는 것이 아니라 남이 행복한 가운데 살기를 원합니다.
'We don't want to hate and despise on-e another.

In this world there is room for everyone and the earth is rich and can provide for everyone.

The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way.
인생은 자유롭고 아름다울 수 있는데도, 우리는 그 방법을 잊고 말았습니다.
'Greed has poisoned men's souls,
탐욕이 인간의 영혼을 중독시켰고
has barricaded the world with hate,
세계를 증오로 단절되게 했으며,
has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed.

We have developed speed but we have shut ourselves in:
우리는 빠른속도로 발전했지만, 우리 스스로를 단절시켰습니다.

Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want,
대량생산을 가능케 한 기계는 우리에게 빈곤을 가져왔고,
Our knowledge has made us cynical,
우리의 지식은 우리를 냉소적으로 만들었으며,
Our cleverness hard and unkind.
우리의 지혜는 냉혹하며 불친절합니다.
We think too much and feel too little:
우리는 너무 많이 생각하면서도 너무 조금 느낍니다.
More than machinery we need humanity,
우리는 기계보다 인간성이 필요하며
More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness.
지혜보단 친절과 상냥함이 필요합니다.
Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost.
이러한 가치들이 없다면, 삶은 난폭해지고 결국 모든 것을 잃게될 것입니다.

 

The airplane and the radio have brought us closer together.
비행기와 라디오 방송은 우리를 더욱 가깝게 연결시켰습니다.
The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men,

Cries out for universal brotherhood for the unity of us all.

Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world,

Millions of despairing men, women and little children,

Victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people.

The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed,
지금 우리가 겪는 불행은 단지 일시적인 탐욕에 불과하며,
The bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress:
인류의 발전을 두려워하는 자들의 원성일 뿐입니다.
the hate of men will pass and dictators die and the power they took from the people,
언젠가 증오는 지나가고 독재자들도 사라질 것이며, 그들이 인류로부터 빼앗아간 힘은
will return to the people and so long as men die now liberty will never perish.
