[참고] accident와 incident의 구분


accident는 교통사고 (traffic accident)처럼 예상 불가능한, 뜻하지 않은 사고를 의미하죠.

incident는 우발적으로 일어나는 것은 같지만...

 

더 큰 사건으로 발전할 가능성이 많은 사고를 의미합니다.

즉, 표면상으로는 별것 아닌것 같지만 큰 사건으로 번질 가능성이 농후한 것들에 사용하죠.


● border incident: 국경 분쟁

● religious incident: 종교 분쟁

● child-abuse incident: 아동학대사건


기타 참고사항

1) accidental

형용사형으로 "우연한, 우발적인, 사고의" 의 의미를 갖습니다. 


● accidental death: 사고사

● accidental fire: 실화

● accidental discovery: 예상외의 발견


2) by accident

"우연히"의 의미를 갖고, 반대말로는 on purpose (고의로)를 사용하죠.

● Our success didn’t come about by accident. 우리들의 성공은 우연히 온게 아니다.

● He didn’t do it on purpose. 그는 고의로 그것을 하지 않았다.


3) without accident

"무사히, 사고 없이"라는 의미를 갖죠.

● She arrived home without accident. 그녀는 무사히 집에 도착했다.

accident 뜻하지 않게 우연히 발생한 사고를 뜻함

Five people have been killed in a climbing accident in Nepal.

(네팔에서 발생한 등반 사고로 5명이 목숨을 잃었다.)

George has had an accident at work and has been taken to the hospital.

(죠지가 작업중에 사고를 당해서 병 원으로 실려 갔다.)

incident 중대 사건으로 발전할 가능성이 있는 사건, 또는 미리 계획, 의도된 사건 을 가리킨다

There are reportedly two or three hijacking incidents a year in Muslim countries.

(보도에 의하면, 이슬람 국가에서는 매년 두 세 건의 비행기 납치사건이 발생한다고 한다.)

After the children had been punushed, nobody mentioned the incident again.

(그 아이가 처벌을 받은 후에, 어느 누구도 그 일 에 대해서 다시는 언급하지 않았다.)

happening 우연히 발생한다는 점에서는 accident와 같으나, '심각한 수준의 사건'을 뜻하지는 않는다

We recently had consecutive mysterious happenings on this island.

(이 섬에서는 최근 이상한 일들이 연속해서 벌어졌다.)

The president announced days ago that he would resign from his chair, but it concluded with just happening.

(대 통령은 자신이 자리에서 물러날 것이라고 몇일 전에 발표했지만, 그 일은 단지 해프닝으로 끝났다.)

event 중요 한 사건이나, 행사

The article discusses the events which led up to the prime minister's resignation.

(그 기사는 수상이 사임하게 된 이유가 되었던 사건들을 다루고 있다.)

The detective reconstructed the sequence of events on the night of the murder.

(그 형사는 살인이 벌어진 그날 밤의 일련의 사건들을 재구성했다.)
